Unknown Recipes of Everyday Ingredients

Unknown Recipes of Everyday Ingredients
Community Involvement, Dimension Variable
The Netherlands and Hong Kong
2019

Sharing stories that involve food ingredients and cooking, the dinner event brings together people from different neighborhoods, providing more playful ways of considering other’s historical backgrounds. It builds up communal intimacy, a richer and more accessible cultural understanding about food and people.

Based on several sessions of gatherings in the communities both in Hong Kong and Utrecht, Sinwah further developed the second live event in which combined moments of eating, reading, and sharing together. The whole dining table hence became an eatable exhibiting space, in which personal food stories and recipes from the former participants were placed next to their respective ingredients in different parts of the table.

From the kitchen where the artist cooked, the food came out in the order that was based on the stories placed on the table. After dinner, people were invited to draw or write on their used placemats. In the end, in a casual and interactive way, people finished the dessert with joy, together.
